What’s This?
There is a world out there, somewhere, when things went in a slightly different direction time ago. Not different enough that the continents are a different shape, or that people are not recognizable as such. But the political lines, the languages, the wars you’ve heard of, are not the same.
To end the last European Mesogeian War, the Rigasian Empire Confederation of Free Countries dropped the Π Bomb on the cities of Nuskom and Alzarte.
But this was not the same bomb we know.
There’s something strange about it. The bombed cities have not healed in twenty years; if anything, they have gotten worse. They are now walled, and a permanent army presence keeps non-authorized people out and things from inside in. They say that the things are merely hurt animals, attacking in pain and hunger, but people talk. A lot.
And they say that the same technology that created the bomb has opened the Wider Universe for Rigasia and its allies to explore. The Worlds that Could Have Been, where things went differently, are now starting to get plundered and conquered same as you were explored and traded with.
It’s the twentieth aniversary of the Bombing of Nuskom, and the Rigasian occupation is ongoing (and will be until we are “mature” enough to sustain our own democratic institutions); we are in the smaller city of Zwosta, upstream from the Exclusion Zone, but you don’t get to enjoy the fruits of the Rigasian Victory. I mean. maybe in the sense that you don’t have to deal with the assholes who started the war. Or so they say. But truth is… hard to come by.
What do We Do?
It’s hard to scrape by when you live next to a permanently poisoned city ruin, especially since the people guarding it (a mixture of local militia and rigasian army personnel) keep arguing for expanding the zone and taking more and more useful land around it. And for young people who don’t have the means to leave things are even worse.
But hey, it means you can do the adventurer thing.
Because there’s a seasonal thing where people are actually paid to hunt the things that come from inside the Zone. Some even go the extra mile and enter very ilegally to hunt them preemptively.
And there’s quite a bit of money to be made by bringing around controlled goods. There’s a lot that Rigasia doesn’t want people to have, and a lot more than the local militia will not want them to have or want to have for themselves: from alcohol and drugs (both recreational and medical) to censored books and media.
And if you are brave enough, there are some rich people who are very dissappointed with the way the war ended and would love to get their hands on stuff from the Zone on the hopes of reverse-engineering what Rigasia did to create it, or find a way to weaponize it against them.
