Session 23

This session was played on 2025-11-29. Clark, Gaia and Maelle experience a very long vision that raises more questions that it answers.

Plot

Several days after the previous session, the players meet with Iorena Sevel for a quasi-official debrief about the events on the train. The meeting is interrupted by Riung, who is talking to every gifted person in Valtshora at once, and asking them to come for a maintenance session related to the Umichooan Subtle Machine.

Gaia and Claire decide to get it over as soon as possible, and so they are shortly gated alongside Maelle to a big workshop in the Umichooan Embassy Floating Island, where Riung explains that given that the Subtle Machine in this particular timeline has not been maintained since the Breaking, she has a lot of work to do.

Things get haywire when Riung notices something about Maelle, and at that moment a feedback loop seems to start between all the presents, throwing them in a dreamspace.

Maelle finds themself in a beach at the foot of a cliff, and climbs some steps on the cliff to behold an impossibly tall and yet broken white tower in the middle of an island, and strange cloud-like creatures anchored to the edges of the cliff. They approach the stalk anchoring one of creatures, but then notices that the air is charging and runs away just in time to not be killed by a titanic electric discharge.

Gaia finds herself also in the beach, and speaks with AMANDA, except, this seems to not be the AMANDA from the present but one from far in the future, that tells Gaia that she's in danger, because she's experiencing a moment past some terrible catastrophe. Gaia chooses to climb the cliff too.

Claire finds herself in the beach, and instead of trying to climb the cliff walks the beach following the base in search of a cave. She finds instead the temple that used to be close to Laville where she took refuge all those years ago, and that kickstarted her powers and gradual transformation. As she approaches, she finds scattered glass bones, and takes one of them.

Maelle wakes up inside the temple, being tended by someone that looks like Claire, but clearly isn't. Maelle recognizes the temple as some kind of shinto building, which puzzles them since they are pretty sure that Claire has never been in Nihon. The strange Claire-like woman tells her to stay there while she brings some food.

The actual Claire then enters the temple to further confusion of both her and Maelle. They talk for a moment, before the other Claire comes back.

On the top of the island, Gaia decides to try to use The Glove to get a better look at things, and uses it first to look at the beach, where she sees an absurd multitude of people waking up on it as all the party members did, and then at the broken tower, where she witnesses the naked glory of Kassatol, the Endless Tower, behind it; and then the loudest version of let me out she has ever experienced. Trying to escape it she runs over the cliff…

And falls into the temple where both Claires are looking at each other, Cloud Strife Style.

After a bit of a scare from Claire and Maelle, who are worried about Gaia, and a bit of “tut-tutting” from the other Claire, who is offended at someone profaning the temple roof, Gaia proceeds to attempt to unravel what the fuck is happening here, identifies Other Claire as some kind of dream being linked to Regular Claire's ongoing transformation and notices that there's something behind Maelle. Something as big as AMANDA, taking up the entirety of the sky from very far away, and tapering off into a female-ish shape as designed by H. R. Giger.

And then, young Riung comes into the temple, politely and according to every formal rule that might apply, including depositing a sizeable donation in the appropriate box.

Quotes

  • You are in a beach; the sun is rising in the north-by-northwest. Something is strange…
  • Riung: It's not perfect. It's not even good. But it's better than the alternative.
  • Claire: About my situation…
  • Riung: You dreamwalked into a memory of this temple, awakened your gift, and merged with an old goddess because you were incredibly compatible, then spent the next decade and a bit denying it?
  • Riung: If the chance of a thing happening is one in a hundred that means that for every timeline where one happens, there are ninety-nine that don't. So in the event of the Umichooan empire breaking, even if the future you ended being the lucky one in the right timeline, there would be millions living in suffering.
  • Maelle: Run, hide, whatever you can. Fight for yourself, dont let the fate of death loom over you for fuck's sake.
  • Riung: There's nowhere to run, and nowhere to hide. Not for a Keeper.
  • Ariyadna: Doctor Ariyadna of Talos, of the Merciful, at your service.
  • Claire: Hm. I'm sorry. Ariyadna?!
  • Gaia: Ohh, another one?
  • Maelle: What the fuck do you mean “Ariyadna”? How are you alive?!
  • Ariyadna: And yes, I just learned that you are taking care of a mini-me. Freaky.
  • Maelle: Not sure if this is insensitive at all but.. did you go with the Witch or…
  • Ariyadna: Yea, I went with her, then she started dying before her time, of cancer. And could not heal herself. It was a very painful four years and got her to reconsider things.
  • Ariyadna: Let's get you some scrubs, and sanitize those hands, and prepare our minds for medicine. It'll be fun!

Trivia

Rose tried and failed to pay a parking ticket.

Zwosta is not the current Valtshoran capital, but the actual one is under control of the pro-rigasian side, so it might as well be, given its very important position next to the Nuskom Zone and being the contact with both the Kesizman and Umichooan delegations.

Iorena is a bit miffed that the party tends to kill every rigasian or rigasian-related enemy they find, and leave no prisoners that could be interrogated. She thinks they need to exercise more caution because one thing Valtshora needs desperately is information.

Apparently Riung is one of those people who can't avoid looking at themselves in mirrors. The problem is that her reflections react to it, and they seem to exchange glances.

You are in a beach; the sun is rising in the north-by-northwest. Something is strange…” is in fact the oldest line in the Clockmaker multiverse.

The players have identified at least five possible Queens this session might make reference to:

  • The Miko: The forgotten goddess that merged with Claire years ago
  • The Renegade: The Renegade Dream Queen that forsook the Giver of Shapes
  • The Keeper: Riung
  • The Squirrel: The Dream Queen of Sun in the Rigasian Timeline
  • The Witch: Queen-Witch in Exile Ariyadna of Talos
