Session 8

This session was played on 17/08/2025. The entirety of the Nuskom region finds itself in high alert because of a new portal event, then discover it is an invasion from Kesizma. Clark, Gaia and Maelle find themselves bouncing from one side of the battles to another trying to keep ahead of everything.

Plot

Half a week after the last session, everyone in Zwosta is woken up by the Sound.

Maelle finds herself having a small panic attack at experiencing that outside the zone and spends some time hugging it out with Yumiko, Clark beelines to the Guildhouse, and Gaia finds herself in the middle of the Hunter Guild already trying to determine what has happened and what to do.

As they move along they discover that the sound has been heard in an enormous circle centered in the Zone that includes Zwosta. Maelle also finds herself experiences the full extent of her emotions as if she was inside the Zone; this keeps happening for the rest of the session.

Both the Green Bell and the Hunter Guild are contacted by the Rigasian Army to provide personnel to an investigation they are conducting in the Hunt Staging Ground. Maelle reaches the place first to learn that the army has dispatched two teams and both have been lost.

In route to the staging ground, Gaia, Clark and Ferret discover that the regular aberrations from the Zone are running away in fear of previously unseen creatures: wolves the size of cars. They find that they are basically immune to conventional firearms, can outrun a small truck, and they can be understood by Gaia in the same way that the squirrel gangs.

In the staging ground, Maelle does some measurements and finds that the reality variance usually associated with the zones has become a complicated but stable repeating pulse, making every scientist and technician on site very confused.

Reaching the staging ground, the party doesn't have too much time to set things up before the base is attacked by several packs of giant wolves. Both infantry and hunters prove to be useless against them, so the rigasian army deploys light tanks, that seem to be on a level ground with the creatures.

During the resulting fight, Clark is nearly run over by one of the tanks but is somehow saved by a version of Mariette who seems to be time jumping and tells him to go to the Deep Zone to stop this and save at least one version of Zwosta.

Ferret leads Clark, Gaia, Maelle and several other surviving hunters back to Zwosta but the car being driven by Gaia crashes into the leg of an elephant the size of a small building, injuring Ferret seriously. Before they are crushed, Gaia manages to convince the elephant that they are not rigasians but valtshorans.

The elephant and several wolves accept the hunter's surrender and take them to “their anagusi” who have set up camp in the center of the Zone, where they entered the rigasian timeline. In the way, they talk and learn the story of how Umichoo broke the world.

In the deep Zone, they find a whole encampment of anagusi people, just like Maal, who are keeping a gigantic Gate open in the center of the ruins of Nuskom, and talk to one of their leaders, proposing an alliance against the rigasian occupation. The conversation is interrupted by a rigasian attack, this time with heavy tanks powered by π cells.

They try to retreat closer to the portal to the medical tents where they are healing Ferret, but are interrupted first by Rose, who was understandably confused about the situation and believed the party to be held prisoners, and then by an actual rigasian heavy tank. Clark takes the glove from Gaia (accepting it for the first time) and manages to freeze the tank to almost the core, but finds that there's something in it (supposedly the π cell) that can't be frozen.

They retreat further closer to the portal trying to escape to Kesizma, but as they escape, a new portal opens in the sky, this one a lot more noisy, from which a rigasian plane comes and starts bombing the anagusi that kept their portal open. The gate loses cohesion and all the region is flooded by flowing mirror.

Quotes

  • This session begins as you get woken up by the Sound.
  • Maelle: I…
  • Maelle: Zone.
  • Maelle: That noise.
  • Maelle: Is zone-related.
  • You hear people blaming the river poisoners, but also blaming the rigasians stopping the hunt. and the latter are gaining volume.
  • Clark: Nodidju, they should evacuate and close their geûye.
  • Gaia: I think we should get ready for evacuation.
  • Eliza: Maybe, but we need to know how big this is to see who to evacuate and where.
  • As Clark enters the courtyard the first thing he sees is Ferret ordering a bunch of people around; the second is Gaia almost hitting him with a car door.
  • Clark: Hey, Gaia, I'm here. Don't run me over again.
  • Gaia: Sorry, maybe another time.
  • Bodrik: Approximately one hour ago, the Zone emitted a very particular sound. Most of you know what it is. Unlike other events, this time it has been heard in an enormous radius that includes several population centers around us. People like you seem to think that this should not be possible.
  • Several people murmur that no, it's not possible as far as they know.
  • Bodrik: Well, I don't care about it being possible; I care that it happened.
  • Maelle: What do your armouries provide? If the situation is as dire as I'm expecting then I'd want some good shit.
  • Bodrik: Ma'am, with due respect: your job is to find what is happening. If something tries to eat you our job is to prevent them from doing that.
  • You see a lot of aberrations running away from the zone, and I don't mean “they come to hunt”; I mean “they are running from their lives”. From wolves. The size of cars.
  • One of the hunters on a car behind you decides to shoot at one of the giant wolves.
  • Ferret: I'm going to eat the heart of whoever did that if they are still alive when…
  • Mariette: Seriously? I try to do this and you try to kill yourself in a different way? Stop that!
  • Mariette: Do you have any idea of how insanely gnarled the timestream is here? I don't even know if I'm close to the right timeline or not.
  • Mariette: If negotiation doesn't work maybe try freezing them? But like, not in a conceptual level that you are considering because you still understand your *ehem* gift the same was as when you were a tween. Just some old-fashioned ice.
  • Clark: How do you know about that?
  • Mariette: Whatever it takes; try to make this Zwosta not die, okay?
  • You suddenly think “why is there a tree on the road?” and then look up, and this one aberration is a giant elephant.
  • Gaia: Fuck!
  • Maelle: What in the fuck!
  • Clark: The fuck is that?!
  • Giant Elephant: Are these R'gasia?
  • Gaia: Valtshora! Valtshora! We're civilians! Valtshoran! Oppressed by Rigasia!
  • Giant Elephant: Are you R'gasia's slaves?
  • Maelle: Are you talking to them?!
  • Gaia: Wh—kind of!
  • Giant Elephant: It was a long time ago, that one of the old civilizations in this corner of the world grew powerful enough to control the very foundation of time and space.
  • Giant Elephant: And they built gates to the worlds that could have been; and there they created a great and bountiful empire that they called Umichoo.
  • Giant Elephant: But their wisdom was not as great as their power, and they did not think their actions through. Because great power makes your footprints great, and their power was great indeed.
  • Giant Elephant: And in time, their reckless actions broke the very world that was the center of their empire.
  • Giant Elephant: In its place there's now a crack in the world. A rift made of nothing that goes nowhere, that they call the Endless Tower.
  • There are rigasian tanks coming, heavy ones.
  • Maelle: Oh, no…
  • Gaia: That's Rigasia!
  • Clark: Rigasian Weapon!
  • Maelle: Goddamn it! Fuck off, Rigasia!
  • Maelle: They're powered by the shit that nuked Nuskom: π cells.
  • Gaia: So the tanks are bombs with armor?
  • Maelle: What the hell are you doing, Rigasia?! What is this?!
  • Gaia: Oh my god, my ears are bleeding, can you shut up?
  • Maelle: …seemingly sentient hunting dogs—Gaia's able to talk to them.
  • Hunter: Yea, but she also talks to squirrels?
  • Maelle: Wait, what?
  • Suddenly the back of the tent is ripped open with a knife, and someone in a balaclava comes in. they have a gun and points it at one of the anagusi medics.
  • Rose: Okay! You're done!
  • Maelle: Put the damn gun down! It's a Goddamn doctor! Fucking psychopath!
  • Rose: What do you mean a doctor?
  • Clark: Stand down, soldier; they are healing us.
  • Rose: I'm letting you go! What the hell is wrong with you?
  • Maelle: We're not prisoners! We're diplomats! Maybe get your racist head out of the clouds and thi—
  • And then a fucking tank goes through the tent.
  • The medic that Maelle is healing sees the glove and recognizes what it is, because she pulls Maelle down for cover.
  • The temperature around Clark drops and starting from him the floor freezes in a very beautiful and complex ice pattern. It extends in a strange spiral and when it touches the tank it grows over it. The tank is massive but it freezes somehow to the ground, and it does not tear the ice.
  • It seems like it's going to freeze fully, but then Clark notices something. There's something inside the ice. Something that can't be frozen.
  • The bombs fall as Clark shoots a fucking ice ball upwards. Good news is… the bombs are conventional. Bad news is… they bombed the dancers. And the gate ripples. The sound becomes discordant. Many of the anagusi panic and try to run away as a wave of flowing mirror explodes outwards.
  • You three grab on to the wolf as the wave of flowing mirror, that as far as you know is the most lethal thing that can happen to you, reaches you. The last thing you hear is:
  • ???: C'mon, your destiny awaits; it'll be fun.

Trivia

Rose wore a balaclava.

This is the first session in Clockmaker to not include Iorena Sevel in the cast. It will be some time before we see her again.

On the other hand, we had every player character appear character for the arc finale, even if it was just a cameo.

Fun fact: the local word for “nuked” would actually be “pied” because it is not nuclear, it's portal-based.
