Session 9

This session was played on 24/08/2025. Instead of the adventures of the usual party, it followed three rigasian convicts (Antonio Vargas, Zoé Curie and Steve) that volunteered to help in timeline exploration to commute their sentences.

Plot

In the Braufliss military base, Antonio, Zoé and Steve meet and are briefed as to what their exploration work will consist in, and what kind of people they should look for. Their iconoclast personalities clash with the attitude of the drill sergeant and results in Antonio getting a bit of a beating.

After some training they are brought to one of the installations in the border of Braufliss Zone where they witness a Rigasian Portal opening and are sent through, with the reminder that the gate will only open for them to come back at daily intervals for a week.

On the other side of the gate, they find themselves in a West-African plain and they commence exploration. After several hours of walking they find first a human path, then some farmland and finally a couple of travelers leading a camel with goods along the road. Despite not having any language in common they manage to join the travelers in their path.

They witness quite a lot of other people as they travel, including a full-on caravan that seems to be passing through and finally reach a town where they separate from the two travelers and whose market they explore, where they are amazed at seeing an anagusi wolf rider walking the street. Neither the rider or the wolf seem to like seeing them though, and they detour to avoid passing next to them.

Sadly most of the food stalls seem to be taking payment in the form of salt, but then a strange laughing woman calls them out and throws a small pouch of salt to them.

As they are finishing their food, the laughing woman approaches them and tells them in heavily accented Gotthos that there's going to be war between Rigasia and Kesizma and that they should get back home as soon as possible if they don't want to be caught in the middle. This sparks a discussion between Zoé and Steve who want to return to Rigasia and earn their freedom, and Antonio, who doesn't want to ever see the inside of a rigasian prison and would rather desert and stay here. They split paths.

The next day, Antonio is woken up by the laughing woman, who again tries to convince him to go back to Rigasia, and failing that, reveals to him that she is trapped in a time loop and he needs to go back and die to prevent the world from being unmade. Antonio tries to argue and comfort the woman, but refuses to fight her and she kills him.

Zoé and Steve try to go back to the portal point but discover that the markers they left have been moved and they ended somewhere else. The laughing woman reveals herself to them too, and again explains the time loop. Zoé and Steve defend themselves, though. Zoé tries to shoot her, but the gun fails to fire. Steve is more successful by using his minor teleportation gift, managing to teleport a small needle inside the woman's head. This enrages her and she telekinetically directs her double-ended lance to slice Steve open.

Antonio wakes up in a memory of his parent's farmhouse where he meets a different version of the laughing woman, who presents herself as Ariyadna and tells him that the version he met while alive has been killing everyone that she considers an obstacle to the completion of the time loop, including versions of herself that do not comply with the plan. The Ariyadna in the Great Dream has since been following her path and fashioning an afterlife of sorts for those that she has killed, as she awaits for her wicked sister to finally bit more that she can chew.

Quotes

  • Sergeant: All right, faggots! Today's your lucky day, and you're meeting your brain for your expedition. It comes attached to a pair of tists, so I don't want to see any one of you even looking wrong at them as long as I am here!
  • Antonio is visibly confused as to what a “faggot” is.
  • Zoé: (entering a prison conference room) Hii, my name is Zoé Curie; I hope we'll be able to work together.
  • Sergeant: What did you say? I didn't hear “yes, sir” there.
  • Antonio: Estás Pendejo, Sir!
  • Operator: We'll open this way eight times, once every twenty four hours. So to come back you need to be at the same place at the same time one day during the next week. Keep track of the place and of the time because we can't keep track of your position. Usually basic exploration is completed in three days or so, but we keep this open for a full week; after that time we assume you can't come back and stop trying.
  • Zoé: No Ariadne's Thread for us then?
  • Antonio: Why is that?
  • Operator: Because opening this thing once is more expensive than providing power for a small city for a year. We managed to argue for seven chances to come back; it used to be three.
  • Around you everyone gets moving. A bunch of people start toggling machines, and others are in front of several monitors (quite small ones in this day and age) and sets of dials.
  • You feel the pillars starting to hum. If you are close enough, you might notice that they are a bit warm even.
  • You hear the Sound. It's slow and grating: like a thousand bubbles and nails on a chalkboard.
  • In the middle of the pillars you see space kind of warp like a mirage and from it a million bubbles of perfect mirror coalesce in a bigger bubble that pulsates strangely.
  • Antonio rips the cloth off the rigasian flag and sticks the pole in the ground.
  • Antonio: Now we have a marker!
  • Zoé: Good enough for me
  • Zoé: [the compass] works!
  • Antonio: Do compasses break with these portal thingies?
  • Antonio greets the two travellers saying “Hello there, comrades!” in his native language.
  • Cool, they also say something in their native language that has absolutely nothing to do with yours.
  • Suddenly someone behind you lets out an extremely piercing whistle.
  • Antonio: Puta madre! What the hell was that—
  • There's a woman laughing at you where the whistling came from. She is one of the slightly less dark women around, but her features are different in yet another way. She also has dark reddish hair, making her very noticeable.
  • Antonio opens the pouch to find it full of salt.
  • Zoé: Did she think you were a performer?
  • Antonio: Maybe? Not sure? Maybe I can work like that here.
  • Zoé: Know any cool tricks?
  • Antonio: Uh… I can play guitar, and my pa taught me some knife tricks.
  • Steve decided to break the laws of reality and used his huge cooking skill to turn a military ration into something palatable.
  • The woman that threw you the bag of salt is standing there and she's holding a huge-ass double-ended spear on her shoulders, her hands resting on the shaft. She has a shit-eating grin as she looks down at you.
  • Antonio: Do you need anything?
  • Ariyadna: No, but you do.
  • Ariyadna: So, let me tell you a little story. A few years from now, your country is goung to fuck up so big that entire timelines will roll up in a little ball. I mean it: time is going in circles in some places. This is the second time I've had to do this.
  • Antonio: W—What do you mean second time?
  • Ariyadna: I mean second time; I'm caught in the circle and I have to ensure that things go the same way so we don't stop existing!
  • Antonio: …Well, can I make a request? If I have to die anyway… somehow tell my pa I love him please? Don't want him knowing I'm gone forever.
  • Ariyadna: One day I will find one of you people and they won't ask that; six thousand days of giving the same explanation.
  • Zoé: Bummer, you are very cute too; I would have loved hearing an explanation from you.
  • Ariyadna Oh my fuck seriously? You… rargh.
  • And then she goes still because Steve teleported a needle inside her brain.
  • Ariyadna: C'mon, your destiny awaits; it'll be fun.

Trivia

Rose wasn't here, but then again neither were any of the others.

Both Antonio's and Steve's players were feeling under the weather today so we took things a bit easier than usual.

Somehow Zoé made a reference to Ariadne's Thread before Ariyadna was even mentioned in the entire campaign. It made the storyteller stop for a moment.

Antonio tended to swear in his native language a lot, represented here by spanish. Only… the actual spanish swearword is “puta” (whore), not “punta” (point).
